The short answer: Houston is in Texas’s competitive electricity market: CenterPoint Energy delivers power, and you buy it from a retail electricity provider whose buyback plan, if any, sets what exported solar earns. Houstonians who signed a home solar contract after August 2025 have five business days to cancel it.
CenterPoint owns the wires and meters, while your retail electricity provider bills you and decides how exports are credited. A proposal that assumed a permanent retail-rate credit may not survive your next plan renewal.
Houston’s hurricane and flood exposure makes roof attachments, insurance and storm damage real issues for solar owners, and summer heat drives heavy air-conditioning use.
Houston homeowners who signed a residential solar contract on or after September 1, 2025 have five business days to cancel, and cancelling also cancels the related loan.
