The short answer: Under K.S.A. 50-640, Kansas buyers can cancel a door-to-door sale until midnight of the third business day. For residential solar contracts signed on or after July 1, 2025, Kansas also requires a separate disclosure document signed at least one calendar day after the contract, and a contract that fails the requirements is null and void. Solar retailers must register with the Kansas Secretary of State.

Cancelling a solar contract in Kansas

Kansas’s door-to-door law requires written and oral notice of your right, and the seller must refund within ten business days of a valid cancellation. Misrepresenting the right to cancel is itself a deceptive act under Kansas law.

Kansas solar rules

Kansas’s 2025 solar law requires a separate disclosure document covering the total cost, production guarantees, fees, liens and a statement that the seller isn’t affiliated with any utility or government agency. Violations carry civil penalties of up to $10,000 each, and the Kansas Consumer Protection Act adds enhanced penalties when the consumer is 60 or older, disabled or a veteran.

How Kansas utilities credit solar

Evergy and Liberty must offer net metering, but unused credits expire each March 31. Electric cooperatives and city utilities aren’t required to offer net metering, so a proposal that assumed year-round retail credits may not match your bills.
