The short answer: Michigan’s Home Solicitation Sales Act, MCL 445.112, gives buyers until midnight of the third business day after signing to cancel, and a mailed notice counts when it’s deposited in a mailbox. Sellers can’t send a courier or third party to pick up your payment until the cancellation period ends, and until the seller complies with the notice rules, you can cancel in any manner and by any means.
If a solar salesperson arranged to collect a deposit at your home during the first three business days, that’s a red flag under Michigan law. Keep records of any payment taken early.
The Michigan Consumer Protection Act prohibits unfair, unconscionable or deceptive methods in trade or commerce, including misrepresenting the characteristics or benefits of what’s being sold.
Michigan’s large utilities use a distributed generation program in which exported power is credited differently from what you pay for grid power. Check what your utility actually credits rather than relying on a proposal’s estimate.
